Ponderings of an insane woman

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 16, 2006, 9:53 PM
  • Mood: Content
  • Reading: New Spring - R. Jordan
For some reason my interest in the world of Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time series has been rekindled. I was reminded of some writing that I had done a loooong time ago based on the Aes Sedai and the White Tower. It was originally done in a Role Play web page and although it ain't great writing, I kinda liked the characters I'd created.  So this got me thinking. How cool would it be to try to create manips based on the WoT series!

No doubt I'm overstepping my abilities here but I guess it gives me something to think about. The surprising thing is that I can't seem to find any groups pertaining to the WoT or Robert Jordan.  There's a Labyrinth group for heaven's sake, but not a WoT group.  It would be kinda fun to start collecting/creating stock that could be used in WoT manips.

Hmmm ... don' t know if I'm quite up to starting up a group yet. Even if I did I'd have no idea what would be expected. Then there's always the copyright argument and I don't want to bring RJ down on our heads

Might think about it a little more and go in search of my books which are packed in boxes from the move and are no doubt being eaten by silverfish as we speak.  If anyone knows of a WoT group on DA please let me know.

Cheers,

Yes, I found the last few books very hard to push through and am hoping that the next book puts an end to it. Although I think RJ is probably a bit over it himself. I believe he's branched out and done a few short stories in between writing WoT  Might be a bit hard to pull all the storylines together in one book tho. Who knows. RJ's a talented writer so I can't wait to see what he does with it.

I'll definitely put some thought into my WoT stock ;)

Yes, that will certainly be something I also have to contend with, the 'experts' I'll aways be open to suggestions tho. Thanks!

Do it! Do it! I don't have the skills nor the patience to do anything like that aside from my own characters, but it's a fantastic project to consider!

Thanks for that Ren. I like the idea of having a goal. At the moment I seem to be floundering around and wasting all my download time. I've already used up my monthly allowance and am on the Go Slow plan. It's driving me nuts! I had a look for my books but only found the latter ones. I would like to start from the beginning to refresh my memory & imagination. Where do you think I'd stand on the copyright issue? Would I be able to use the terminology (eg. Aes Sedai, Aiel, etc) and maybe even characters without finding myself sued into oblivion?

I'm not sure what the policy is on art based on written characters. WoT is a huuuuge franchise. I know you definitely couldn't sell anything as prints or your own stories about them, however it is classified as "fan art". I know a couple people on DA who do wonderful character images, so I guess it's alright.

Yeah I figured there would be a problem only if I started making money out of it - which is not going to happen. So I might play around a bit and see what I come up with. Thanks for your thoughts.
